THE LEAD— Thanks to two different goal scorers, the Salem State women's soccer team earned a crucial Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) 2-0 win over Fitchburg State Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Throughout the first half, both sides played each other hard, but neither goalie allowed the opposing team to gain momentum. Salem goalie, Ava Guyer (East Granby, Conn.) faced two shots early on at 10:20 and 30:41, but the Vikings' netminder stonewalled Fitchburg each time and kept the game scoreless.
  • With a little over 12 minutes until halftime (33:56), Salem got on the board first thanks to a score from Chelsea Martinez (Salem, Mass.) after Jenna Mitza (Tyngsboro, Mass.) set up the midfielder. From then on, the Salem defense limited Fitchburg to just four shots with only one being on net as the squad took a 1-0 advantage into the half.
  • The second half started the same as the first, as both sides played strong defense, but at the 71:43 mark, Samantha Agno (Salem, Mass.) gave the Vikes an insurance goal after Krysta Zamejtis (Danvers, Mass.) crossed a nice pass from the left side of the box to her.
  • As the half came to a close (88:42), the Falcons trimmed the deficit to one when Adrianna Westcott intercepted a clearout from Guyer and sent a shot past the junior goalie. However, the Salem defense held firm the rest of the way, and the Blue and Orange earned the eventual 2-1 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Agno's score is her second of the year. Meanwhile, Martinez's score is the first of her career.
  • Zamejtis dished out her team-leading third assist on the afternoon. Mitza's helper is her first for the 2025 campaign.
  • Guyer finished the day with eight saves. She has now posted eight saves in three straight contests.
  • Madison Dawkins and Cassandra Pendelton split time in the net, with Dawkins stopping eight shots in 75:56 of action. Meanwhile, Pendelton ended the day with one stop in 14:04
  • Salem and Fitchburg ended the contest with 16 shots apiece. However, the Vikings held the advantage in corner kicks, 5-2.
  • With today's win, Salem snapped a previous six-game losing streak to the Falcons.
