THE LEAD— The Salem State women's volleyball team closed out the regular season with a competitive 3-1 win (26-28, 25-18, 25-16, 25-23) over Mass. Maritime on Saturday afternoon. Before the match, the Vikings honored their seven seniors on senior day. Salem State and the women's volleyball team would like to thank Ariana Barrows (Danvers, Mass.), Kailey Roche (Billerica, Mass.), Mackenzie Hubert (Plymouth, Mass.), Gianna Mahoney (Revere, Mass.), Khloe Camblin (Saugus, Mass.), Kayla Sullivan (Millis, Mass.), and Presley Shairs (Salem, Mass.) for their dedication to the Salem State women's volleyball program throughout their careers!
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Early in the first set, it was all Salem as the squad jumped out to a 12-5 lead, highlighted by three kills from Shairs. However, Mass. Maritime hung around and pulled within three (16-13) courtesy of an 8-4 rally. Salem was able to give itself breathing room and went up five (19-14) by taking advantage of a Buccaneers service error.
- Despite the larger lead, the visitors would not go quietly in the set and tied things up at 22 thanks to an 8-3 stretch. Both sides continued to trade points back and forth, and with things tied at 25, the Buccaneers outscored the Vikings 3-1 the rest of the set for a 28-26 set win.
- In the second set, the Salem offense once again came out fast, and the squad had an early 11-5 lead. Later in the frame, Mass. Maritime grabbed a few quick points and found themselves down five (15-10).
- However, the Vikes would not let them get any closer as the squad grabbed its first 10-point lead in the set (22-12) behind a 7-2 surge. During Salem's impressive stretch, Barrows chipped in two kills for the squad. While the Bucaneers would not go quietly and cut the deficit in half (23-18), Salem took the second set on back-to-back kills from Sabina Kamanda (Dracut, Mass.).
- Similar to the first two sets, the Blue and Orange's offense got off to a fast start and went up 10 quickly by grabbing an 18-8 lead. Bella Coccia (Westfield, Mass.) led the surge with three kills for the squad. While Mass. Maritime would trim its deficit to eight (21-13), Salem did not allow the visitors to gain any more momentum and finished off the set, scoring four of the last seven points to win the third set, 25-16.
- The fourth set had plenty of back-and-forth action. After a Celia Carbone (Lynnfield, Mass.) ace made it 10-6, Mass. Maritime would fight back and even the match at 13 courtesy of a 7-3 rally. Both sides never felt like one could pull away from the other as the set played on, and with the set tied at 15, the Vikings recaptured a four-point advantage by going up 19-15 by taking advantage of Mass. Maritime errors.
- Even with the four-point lead, the Bucanners lingered around and found themselves down one (19-18) after an Ashleigh Catlett kill. As the frame went on, Mass. Maritime had just its third lead of the set (21-20) after a Vikings error. However, the Vikings rallied and ultimately outscored the Buccaneers, 5-2, for the rest of the way, securing a 25-23 win.
