THE LEAD—  The No. 4 seed Salem State women's soccer team bowed out of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) tournament after falling in a tough 3-2 penalty shootout to No. 5 seed Framingham State on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Less than 10 minutes into the first half (9:44), Salem struck first courtesy of a score by Lindsay McGotty (Morristown, N.J.) after a nice look by Jenna Mitza (Tyngsboro, Mass.). Mitza took the ball into the box, where she tapped it back to McGotty, who was waiting behind her near the top of the goalie box. From there, she put a high-arching shot over Rams' goalie Savannah Goba's right side for the quick 1-0 lead.
  • As the opening frame continued to play out, Framingham had multiple chances to get on the board. The Rams peppered Salem goalie Ava Guyer (East Granby, Conn.) with three shots on net, but the junior netminder turned away each shot, and the squad took a 1-0 advantage into the half.
  • Later in the second half, the Rams ended up tying the contest at one courtesy of a Sophia Thimm score at 70:34. Toward the end of regulation, Salem had two great looks by Mitza and McGotty for the game-winner, but Amelia Finely stopped both shots for the Rams and would force overtime.
  • Towards the end of the first overtime at 99:18, Mitza had another opportunity for the game-winner, but unfortunately, Finley made another stop, and both sides would go into a second overtime.
  • In the second extra period, Framingham had a chance of its own for the game-winning goal when Ana Serrano put a shot on net, but Guyer made the crucial stop to force a penalty shootout. Ultimately, in the penalty shootout, Lily Gouveia knocked down the eventual winning shot, which allowed the Rams to win the contest in penalty kicks, 3-2.
