THE LEAD— The Salem State women's soccer team suffered its first loss by dropping a 3-0 MASCAC matchup at Westfield State Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the opening moments of the first half (00:27), Westfield tested Salem State goalie Ava Guyer (East Granby, Conn.) by firing a shot on net, but the junior goalier turned the Owls away.
  • However, the Owls kept testing Guyer throughout the first as the hosts fired off six shots on net before Kylie Tomasetti broke the scoreless tie after capitalizing on a Morgan Berthiaume corner kick. Nearly four minutes later, the Owls struck again when Julianna Lanzillo found the back of the net, which gave Westfield a 2-0 lead going into the half.
  • Westfield continued its momentum from the first nearly seven minutes into the second (52:43) when Olivia Crooks scored the Owls' third goal on the day. Salem had a solid look to get on the board at 67:26 when Krysta Zamejtis (Danvers, Mass.) put a shot on net, but was unfortunately turned away by the Owls' goalie, Julia Robak. From then on, the Westfield defense held firm and secured a 3-0 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Guyer ended the day with eight saves. She has recorded five or more saves in three of her last four starts.
  • Robak finished with two saves on the afternoon for Westfield.
  • Westfield outshot Salem, 25-4. The Owls also held the advantage in corner kicks by a 6-2 margin.
  • Salem's 5-1-1 record through seven games is the program's best since 2008, when the Vikings began the year 6-1-1.
  • Before today, Guyer's streak of six-straight games of not allowing a goal was the longest stretch of her career.
