THE LEAD— Thanks to three different goal scorers, the Salem State women's soccer team extended its win streak to four games with a 3-0 shutout of Colby-Sawyer Thursday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the opening moments of the first half, both sides played each other equally. The Chargers had multiple chances to strike first, but Vikings goalie Ava Guyer (East Granby, Conn.) stonewalled Colby-Sawyer each time. The Chargers' best opportunity came at the 27:00 mark when they peppered the junior goalie with back-to-back shots, but she came up with the save each time.
- Nearly a minute after the Chargers threatened, Salem State broke the scoreless tie thanks to Tatianna Lazo (Lynn, Mass.) after Ava LeCours (Townshend, Vt.) set her up nicely. From then on, Guyer and the Vikings defense kept Colby Sawyer off the scoreboard, and the squad took a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
- Early in the second, Salem added onto its lead thanks to a Krysta Zamejtis (Danvers, Mass.) penalty kick at 48:25. Later in the frame, the Vikings tacked on another goal off the boot of McKenna Gilligan (Salem, Mass.), which made it 3-0.
- After the Vikings' goal, the defense held strong as the Blue and Orange only allowed just four shots on goal, but Guyer stopped all four and gave the Vikings an eventual 3-0 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Lazo's goal marked the first of her career.
- Meanwhile, Zamejtis tied her with the team lead at two, and Gilligan was her first of the 2025 campaign.
- Guyer once again was stellar in the net as she finished with a season-high nine saves.
- For Colby-Sawyer, Gabby Caldonio got the start and ended the first half with three saves. After that, the rotation of Nicole Morello and Lyndsey Valletta combined for two saves. Both of the stops came from Valletta.
- Despite the loss, Colby-Sawyer held a slight advantage in shots, 12-9.
- Thursday's matchup marked the 12th overall matchup, and Salem currently holds the series lead, 8-2-2. The Vikings have won or tied in five of the last six matchups.
- Salem's win streak is the longest since the 2008 season, when the Vikings began the year 6-0-1.
