THE LEAD— The Salem State Women's Soccer team extended its win streak to three games after the Vikings topped Mass. Maritime 4-0 in their MASCAC opener on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Salem State wasted no time as the squad got on the board first less than 10 minutes (7:44) in the half after Krysta Zamejtis (Danvers, Mass.) sent her shot past Mass. Maritime goalie, Brady Deschamps. Nearly five minutes later (12:41), the Vikes struck again after Zamejtis found an open Olivia Henke (Bay Shore, N.Y.) who made it 2-0.
  • The Vikings offense continued to stay hot as the Blue and Orange tacked on another goal before halftime at 39:31 when Samantha Agno (Salem, Mass.potted the team's third goal as Salem took a 3-0 lead into halftime.
  • Along with a strong offensive showing in the first half, the Salem State defense played a key part as well by allowing zero shots for the Buccaneers.
  • As the second half got underway, the Vikings' offense continued where it left off when Jenna Mitza (Tyngsboro, Mass.) made it 4-0 after sneaking her shot past Deschamps.
  • From then on, the squad's defense continued to give Mass. Maritime fits and allowed just five shots with four being on net. However, Ava Guyer (East Granby, Conn.) stopped all four with ease, and the Vikings would end up with the 4-0 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Mitza's goal is her second of the season, and she currently leads the team.
  • Agno's score towards the end of the first marked her first collegiate goal.
  • Guyer finished the afternoon with four stops. Meanwhile, Deschamps stopped a game-high 15 shots for Mass. Maritime.
  • Salem State outshot Mass. Maritime by a 29-5 margin while also having the advantage in corners as well, 6-2.
  • The Vikings have now won the last 17 matchups against the Buccaneers. Seven of the last 17 have been via shutout.
  • Salem's three-game win streak is the longest since 2017, when the Vikes won six in a row.
  • The last time Salem started the season 3-0 was in 2008. That year, the squad started the year 6-0-1 before suffering its first loss in the eighth game.

UP NEXT

  • Salem State will have some much-deserved time off before returning to action on Thursday, September 11, at 7:00 p.m., when the Vikings host Colby-Sawyer.
