THE LEAD Thanks to an early goal in the second half from Jenna Mitza (Tyngsboro, Mass.), the Salem State women's soccer team took its season opener at Rhode Island College, 1-0, on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the opening moments of the first half, both sides' defenses held the other team's offense in check, as neither side registered a shot for the first 12 minutes before Rhode Island College missed wide right.
  • Later in the first (23:59), the Anchormen had a solid chance to get on the board first but thanks to Salem State goalie, Ava Guyer (East Granby, Conn.) made a clutch save at the top of the net. Nearly 10 minutes later (33:48), the Vikings had their first real shot on net when Anna Frost (Ada, Mich.) put a shot on net, but was turned away by the Anchormen keeper, Oceana Orlandi.
  • Despite having two solid opportunities at the end after shots from both Frost and Krysta Zamejtis (Danvers, Mass.), Salem and Rhode Island went into the half tied at zero.
  • Nearly two minutes into the second (46:55), the Vikings broke the scoring drought courtesy of a Mitza goal after Zamejtis was able to set up the senior for her first goal of the 2025 campaign.
  • From then on, Salem State's defense and Guyer kept the hosts in check, highlighted by two crucial saves from the junior goalie at the 68:12 and 77:37 marks. After those two scoring chances, the Blue and Orange held on for the 1-0 season-opening victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Guyer finished the afternoon with three saves on the day. Meanwhile, her counterpart in Orlandi also had three saves.
  • Mitza's goal marked the seventh of her career.
  • Zamejtis' assist was the first of her collegiate career.
  • Friday's match marked the fourth meeting between the two programs, and with today's win, Salem is now 2-2 against Rhode Island College.
  • Today's victory was the squad's first season-opening win since the 2012 season (at WPI, Sept. 1, 2012).
