Vikings Dominate in First Road Game of the Season, 70-52

THE LEAD

WENHAM, MASS. — The Salem State University Women’s Basketball team delivered a strong win against the Gordon College Fighting Scots.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Salem State jumped out to a five-point lead early in the game. Gordon fought back to tie the game at 13-13 with just 2:48 remaining in the first quarter. Salem then went on a 9-1 run to extend their lead, ending the period in their favor 22-14.

The Fighting Scots came close to tying the game again with a score of 24-21 at 04:03 into the period. But the Vikings continued their domination, outscoring Gordon again and going into the halftime break leading 36-27.

The Vikings went on a few runs this period, opening with four points just 0:46 into the period. Later in the period, they went on a 20-2 run to extend their lead to 25 points. They continued to outscore Gordon 24-10, going into the final frame with a score of 60-37.

The Vikings held their highest lead of the game at 26 points in the fourth period, continuing their momentum coming out of the third period. The fourth period was the only period where the Fighting Scots outscored the Vikings, but fell short of a successful comeback.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Salem State was dominant across the board in their game against Gordon College. Salem State had the most productivity off the bench with 31 points scored, versus the Fighting Scots 13. Salem State dominated in the paint scoring 36 of their 70 points from

within. The Vikings finished the game shooting 36.6% from the field and 35.3% from three-point distance.

Yamilette Guerrero (Fr.) lead the stat books for Salem State with 11 points, five assists and going 4-6 from the field. Yami also led the Vikings in minutes played, with 23 total.

Ernidia Goncalves (Sr.) and Destiny Alce (Fr.) contributed 10 points each in the Vikings win over the Fighting Scots. Goncalves also lead the team in rebounds (nine) and blocks (three).

 

UP NEXT

The Vikings will head to Wenham to take on the Gordon Fightin’ Scots next Tuesday, November 25, paying a visit to Gordon College’s Bennett Center for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
