THE LEAD – The Salem State men's tennis team earned a key Little East Conference (LEC) victory over Southern Maine, 5-2 on Tuesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Salem kicked things off by taking the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots from Quentin Wilkins (Hamilton, Mass.) and Mark Wood (Lynn, Mass.) in the first pairing by a score of 6-1. Followed by Ian Ronan (Quincy, Mass.) and Jesse Rubera (Haverhill, Mass.), who won in the No. 2 slot at 6-1.
- In singles action, the Vikes reached four points first, thanks to wins by Wilkins, Wood, and Ronan. Wilkins earned the first win in singles at the No.1 spot, topping his opponent, 6-0, 6-1.
- After Wilkins' win, Wood followed right behind with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No.3, and finally, Ronan earned a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at No.2 to secure the match. Salem also saw Rubera earn a win in No.5 singles in a hard-fought 1-6, 6-2, 10-5 triumph.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Wilkins has now won nine of his 10 nine singles contests.
- Woods and Wilkins have won six of their last seven doubles matches.
- Ronan has won six of his last seven contests in singles action.
- The Vikings have beaten the Huskies in six of the last seven matchups. Currently, Southern Maine holds the overall series lead with a record of 13-12.
