THE LEAD – The Salem State men's tennis team wrapped up its non-conference portion of the schedule with a thrilling 4-3 win at UNE on Monday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In doubles, UNE took the point after winning two of the three matches. Salem's lone doubles win came thanks to the pairing of Quentin Wilkins (Hamilton, Mass.) and Mark Wood (Lynn, Mass.) winning the No.1 spot, 7-5. Despite the loss in No.2 doubles, the first-year duo of Jesse Rubera (Haverhill, Mass.) and Ian Ronan (Quincy, Mass.) pushed UNE's doubles pairing to a 6(4)-7(7) contest.
- Rubera helped even things for the Vikings after leading off with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No.5 singles. However, UNE ended up taking the next two singles match-ups and pushed its lead to two (3-1). The Vikings ended up pushing back and tied things at three thanks to wins from Wood and Michael Makiej (Andover, Mass.). Wood's match at No. 3 singles went back and forth before the junior won 6-2, 7(8)-6(6).
- Down to the last match on the day, Wilkins came up with a clutch 3-6, 7(7)-6(5), 6-4 win that ultimately gave the Vikes the 4-3 win on the day at No. 1 singles.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Wilkins has now won eight of his last nine singles contests.
- Woods and Wilkins have won five of their last six doubles matches.
- Makiej earned his first career singles win.
- Monday's contest marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
