THE LEAD – The Salem State men's tennis team returned to Little East Conference (LEC) action on Saturday by traveling to UMass Boston, where the squad fell, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UMass Boston took the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. However, Quentin Wilkins (Hamilton, Mass.) and Mark Wood (Lynn, Mass.) prevented the sweep after winning the No.1 doubles, 6-3.
- Wilkins helped even things back at one in singles action by taking the first spot, 7-6, 6-4 in a thriller. While the Beacons responded with a win at No. 2 singles, Ian Ronan (Quincy, Mass.) evened things back at two with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles.
- However, the Beacons went on to win the next three singles matches and ultimately the match, 5-2.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Wilkins extended his singles win streak this season to six matches.
- Salem and UMass Boston have met 48 times, with the overall series tied, 24-24.
