THE LEAD – Thanks to a dominant effort all around, the Salem State men's tennis team earned its second Little East Conference (LEC) win by topping VTSU Castleton, 7-0 Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In doubles action, Salem took the point after Quentin Wilkins (Hamilton, Mass.) and Mark Wood (Lynn, Mass.) earned a 6-2 win at the No. 1 spot. In the No. 2 doubles, Ian Ronan (Quincy, Mass.) and Jesse Rubera (Haverhill, Mass.) grabbed a 6-0 shutout, and finally in No. 3 doubles, Michael Makiej (Andover, Mass.) and Michael Muttiah (Colombo, Sri Lanka) won by default.
  • Wilkins opened up singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 1 spot, and in No. 2 singles, Wood swept his opponent 6-0, 6-0. Finally, Ronan ultimately secured the match with a solid 6-1, 6-3 triumph at the No. 3 singles to give the squad a 4-0 lead. 
  • Rubera and Muttiah both capped off their singles matchups with 6-0 sweeps, and Makieji earned a win via default.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Wilkins extended his singles win streak this season to four matches. 
  • Ronan and Rubera have now won three of their last four doubles contests.
  • Salem and VTSU Castleton have now met six times, and the Vikes currently have a 6-0 record all-time against the Spartans.
  • The Blue and Orange opened LEC play undefeated for the first time since 2024 (3-0 start in conference play).
