THE LEAD – The Salem State men's tennis team opened up Little East Conference (LEC) play with a hard-fought 4-3 win over WestConn Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Salem kicked off doubles with a 6-2 win in the first spot thanks to the pairing of Quentin Wilkins (Hamilton, Mass.) and Mark Wood (Lynn, Mass.). The squad then took the doubles point after a gritty 7-6 (7-5) win courtesy of Ian Ronan (Quincy, Mass.) and Jesse Rubero (Haverhill, Mass.).
- The squad continued its momentum into singles action, taking the first three sets thanks to Wilkins, Wood, and Ronan. Wilkins was in a tightly contested match after he took his matchup by a score of 7-6 (10-5). Later, in the third spot, Ronan grinded out a three-set win by a score of 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
- While WestConn ended up taking the last three singles match-ups, it was too late, as the Vikings came away with the 4-3 LEC win.
