THE LEAD— Thanks to a late Stephane Fevry (Haverhill, Mass.) score at 82:59, the Salem State men's soccer team earned a crucial 2-1 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) victory at Worcester State Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Less than 20 minutes into the first (17:21), Worcester State got on the board first thanks to an Xavi Alavarado score. After the early Worcester goal, Salem's offense stayed aggressive the rest of the way, outshooting Worcester, 7-3, with three of the shots being on net. However, the Vikes could not find an equalizer as the hosts took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
- Shortly into the second at 53:46, Iago De Sousa-Vieira (Medford, Mass.) potted the equalizer after coralling a loose ball on a throw-in outside the penalty box. As the second half continued, both squads played hard, but at 82:59, Fevry found the back of the net for the 2-1 Salem lead. After putting on a couple moves on a Worcester State defender near the box, the sophomore midfielder gave himself enough room to rifle in a shot at the top of the box past a diving Tobias Schneider.
- For the remainder of the second, Salem's defense held Worcester to zero shots and earned an eventual 2-1 MASCAC win.
