THE LEAD— Despite a hat trick from Iago De Sousa-Vieira (Medford, Mass.), the Salem State men's soccer team tied 3-3 versus Bridgewater State Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Nearly halfway through the first half (21:25), De Sousa-Vieira drew a foul inside the box, which allowed the forward a penalty kick. He beat Bears goalie Kyle Sullivan by shooting a line drive past a diving Sullivan to make it 1-0.
- As the half went on, Bridgewater drew a foul of its own inside the Salem goalie box, and Filippo Mucci evened the contest at one by sending his shot past Brady Whitmarsh (Attleboro, Mass.). For the remainder of the first, both sides played each other hard and would go into the half knotted at one.
- Nearly two minutes into the second (47:23), Stephane Fevry (Haverhill, Mass.) set up De Sousa-Vieira with a nice cross pass that allowed him to just tap the ball past Sullivan for a 2-1 lead. However, nearly a minute later (48:58), the Bears responded once again courtesy of a Ryan Healy score to make it a 2-2 ballgame.
- With less than 10 minutes left in the contest, De Sousa-Vieira completed his hat trick by sending his shot past Sullivan once again at the 81:52 mark. Despite grabbing a late lead, Bridgewater answered Salem's score and tied the contest at three off the boot of Nick Anselmo.
- Bridgewater had multiple chances at the end to steal the game from Salem, but Whitmarsh stood tall in net and the squad came away with a 3-3 draw.
