THE LEAD
SALEM, MASS. — The Salem State men's hockey team dropped their fifth straight game to the UMass.-Dartmouth Corsairs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Vikings struck first in the opening frame, thanks to a goal from Declan Loughnane (So.) 04:49 into the game. Jon Waselko (So.) was assessed a two-minute minor for boarding, sending the Corsairs on their first power play of the game. The Corsairs were were able to even the score with just seven seconds left on their power play. UMass.-Dartmouth scored again with just over 30 seconds left in the period and went into the first break leading 2-1.
William Nepveu made 16 saves in the second frame. The Vikings went on the power play late in the period, from a slashing call on the Corsairs Tristan Boyer. The Vikings were unable to convert and ended the second frame behind, 4-1.
The third period saw a flurry of power play opportunities, with neither team able to score on the advantage. The Corsairs struck first at 06:14, and again at 15:21 to seal their win 6-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Salem State’s penalty kill was strong in this game, holding the Corsairs to just holding them to just one goal in their four power play opportunities
Declan Loughnane scored the Viking’s lone goal of the game, coming 04:49 into the first period.
