Basketball Milestones:
1910 - First men's basketball team at Salem Normal School is formed. Salem Normal defeats a team from Salem High known as the "Reserves" 6-5 in their first game. 2007 - Senior All-American Eric Downie notches his 1,000th career point in just his second season as the Vikings clinch the MASCSC title with an 81-72 victory over Bridgewater State on February 16th.
1932 - Salem Normal School becomes Salem Teachers
College
2009 - Two-time MASCAC Player of the Year, Dylan Holmes, leads the Vikings to a 23-7 mark, and a pair of wins over RIT and Widener in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament to help Salem State reach the "Sweet 16."
1937- Herb Brenner selected to the New England Teachers Athletic Conference basketball all-star team at the guard position 2015 - Senior Bryan Ortiz becomes the 26th Salem State player to score 1,000 career points. Ortiz notches 20 points in a MASCAC Semifinal loss to Westfield State to finish with 1,013 career points.
1955 - James Twohig '37, a four-year player during his time at Salem Teachers College takes over the head coaching duties. Twohig amasses a winning percentage of over .800 from 1955-1966, as his teams won multiple New England State College titles. The gymnasium at the O'Keefe Sports Compex was named in his honor in 2001. 2017 - Freshman Sean Bryan's three-pointer with tine running out, helps second seed Salem State erase a 17-point second deficit against Bridgewater State, propelling the Vikings to a 69-68 victory over the third seed Bears in the semifinals of the MASCAC Tournament. Salem State defeats Worcester State State 100-82 to earn the program's 17th MASCAC Tournament title. Senior Marcus Faison becomes just the seventh player in school history to surpass 1,000 career points and 700 rebounds.
team to a 27-1 record, and earns New England Small College Basketball Coach of the Year honors. Blackwell directs team for six years and earns four conference and two New England titles. Salem State all-time leading scorer, and three time All-American John Galaris scores his 2,000th career point against Rhode Island College. 2018 - Senior Shaquan Murray scores 22 points enroute to scoring his 1,000th career point in an 82-74 victory over Suffolk. Murray finishes with 1,400 career points, placing him 10th all-time on Salem State's career scoring list.
1974 - Head coach Joe Lavacchia leads team to an 18-4 record and Salem State's first-ever MASCAC championship.  
1980 - Behind the play of future Chicago Bull's head coach Tom Thibodeau '81, who averages 26 points per game, Salem State (19-10) wins the MASCAC championship, and earns the school's first NCAA Tournament bid.  
1986 - Salm State compiles a 22-6 record under head coach Dana Skinner to win the MASCAC Championship.Trailing Clark University by eight points with :58 seconds to play in the opening round of the NCAA Tournamnet, the Vikings rally behind Nate Bryant, David Fazio, and Terry Jackson and stun the Cougars 73-71 to advance to the secound round.  
1991- Head Coach Jim Todd leads Salem State to second consecutive "Sweet 16" and the first of consecutive 21-game winning streaks. Salem State (26-2), and 14-0 in the MASCAC ends the regular seaon ranked No.1 in New England, and No. 2 in the nation.  
2000 - Two-time All-American guard Tishaun Jenkins leads Salem State to a 27-5 record, and under the direction of head coach Brian Meehan, helps the program reach its first-ever "Final Four."
