THE LEAD—  The Salem State field hockey kicked off a three-game road trip at Westfield State but ended up falling 9-0 Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Less than five minutes into the first quarter (3:08), Westfield State struck first off the stick of Caroline Andrade after she coralled her initial miss. Salem had a chance to even the contest at 4:25 when Sarah Gionfriddo (Pepperell, Mass.) sent a shot on net but was unfortunately turned away by Owls goalie, Emma Gniadek. Later in the frame, Westfield tacked on a second goal and took a 2-0 lead going into the second.
  • In the opening moments of the second (17:44), the Vikings had another good look to get on the board when Gionfriddo put another shot on net that was turned away by Gniadek. At the 22:40 mark, the Owls netted another goal when Kacey Curran sent her shot past Salem goalie, Izzy Mosley (Middleborough, Mass.) after initially stopping a shot prior to Curran's goal.
  • After halftime, Westfield's offense continued its momentum and tacked on six goals between the third and fourth quarters which ultimately resulted in a 9-0 win for the hosts.
