THE LEAD— The Salem State field hockey team kicked off the 2025 campaign with a road matchup at Salve Regina, but unfortunately fell 9-0 on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first quarter, it was all Salve Regina as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Less than a minute into the frame (00:52), the Seahawks struck first thanks to a goal from Julia Decker. As the quarter went on, Decker netted her second goal of the afternoon at the 4:35 mark, and later, Salve Regina scored twice nearly within a minute of each other with goals at 8:39 and 9:46, thanks to Elliot Lund and Decker, respectively.
- Early in the second (17:33), Salve scored once again, thanks to Decker, and nearly two minutes later (19:51), Decker found the back of the net again. Salem had a strong chance to get on the board at 23:21 when Allison Thomas (Carver, Mass.) put a shot on net but was turned away by Seahawks goalie Siany Ortiz. Salve tacked on one more goal before halftime when Sage Mauro netted the team's seventh goal and the hosts would head into the half up 7-0.
- Salve struck quickly once again in the third at 30:43 and 31:11 with goals from Decker and Georgia Costello for a 9-0 advantage. For the remainder of the quarter, the Seahawks' defense held firm and prevented the Salem State offense from getting going. Emily Schneider (South Hadley, Mass.) had a shot on net before the frame ended, but was stopped by Ortiz, and Salve headed into the final frame up nine.
- In the fourth, Salem's defense had its strongest showing by keeping Salve off the board, but unfortunately, the hosts came away with a 9-0 win.
