THE LEAD— The Salem State women's volleyball team fell in its road finale at Eastern Connecticut State, 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-17), Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both sides traded points early in the first set. After a Bella Coccia (Westfield, Mass.) kill pulled Salem within two (8-6), Eastern Connecticut grabbed its first 10-point lead of the set (17-7) courtesy of a 9-1 surge. During the Warriors' scoring run, Allegra Copeland highlighted the run with two kills. For the remainder of the set, the hosts never let Salem grab any momentum as they closed out the first on an 8-4 run for the 25-11 set win.
- In the second set, each team once again would not let the other pull away early on. After the Warriors grabbed an early two-point lead, the Vikings pushed back and evened things at 12 thanks to an Ariana Barrows (Danvers, Mass.) kill and Eastern Connecticut State error. However, the hosts gave themselves some breathing room by going up four (16-12) behind two Ariah Davis aces.
- The Blue and Orange would continue to hang around and pulled within three (22-19) after taking advantage of multiple Warriors errors. Unfortunately, Eastern Connecticut ended up scoring the last three points of the set and won the second, 25-19.
- Salem jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead in the third set behind two Warriors errors and a Barrows kill. However, the hosts evened things at four and then took a four-point lead, going up 13-9 behind a 9-5 run.
- The Vikings continued to keep within striking distance and pulled within one (14-13) after once again taking advantage of multiple Eastern Connecticut errors. Despite Salem cutting the deficit to one, the Warriors gave themselves space and made it a five-point lead (19-14) with a quick 5-1 spurt. From then on, the hosts outscored Salem, 6-3, and earned the 3-0 sweep.
