THE LEAD – The Salem State Vikings earned a crucial Little East Conference (LEC) win by topping the University of Southern Maine, 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After Plymouth took the doubles point by winning No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, Salem avoided the sweep with a 6-0 sweep at No. 3 doubles from the pairing of Samantha Bidzerkowny (Weelsville, N.Y.) and Delaney Cox (Spencer, Mass.).
  • The Huskies continued their momentum going into singles taking the first two singles matches to go up 3-0. However, Salem held off the hosts after Bidzerkowny ended up with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles.
  • From then on, the Vikes won the next three singles matches with Samantha Tenney (Danvers, Mass.) taking the No. 4 singles in a hard-fought 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win. In No. 5 singles action, Ryann Tripp (Wareham, Mass.) grabbed the win, 6-1, 6-1, and finally, Cox gave the squad match point with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph in No. 6 singles.
