THE LEAD: The Salem State women's lacrosse team kicked off a two-game road trip with a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) contest at Bridgewater State, where the Vikings fell, 15-5, on Tuesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Bridgewater State applied the offensive pressure throughout the first quarter, outscoring Salem, 4-0. Ashley Silva led the Bears' early offense with two goals. Early in the second, Salem got on the board thanks to an Addie McAughey (West Bend, Wisc.) free-position at the 13:44 mark.
- Despite the early Vikings goal in the second, Bridgewater responded, scoring three unanswered goals and pushing its lead up to six (7-1) with 07:07 left in the half. Jade Munoz highlighted the Bears' surge with two scores. However, Salem ended the half with a score thanks to Aislinn Bennett (Milford, Mass.), and the squad went into halftime down five (7-2).
- In the third, the Bears opened the frame with three-straight scores, with two coming from Silva to open up a 10-2 lead. Later, with less than five minutes left in the third (04:38), Laura Young (Leominster, Mass.) broke up Bridgewater's momentum and made it 10-3. However, the Bears tacked on two more goals and had their largest lead (12-3) before Young closed out the quarter with another score to make the deficit 12-4.
- Even with an Olivia Tednes (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) score in the fourth, it would not be enough as the hosts outscored Salem, 3-1, and ultimately secured a 15-5 win.
