Women's Lacrosse Suffers First Loss of Regular Season at Johnson & Wales

THE LEAD: The Salem State women's lacrosse team saw its 8-0 The start of the season finally came to an end after falling to JWU 17-4 on Monday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • JWU wasted no time as the hosts found the back of the net nearly 30 seconds into the contest (14:27) when Giovanna Gulinello scored the opening goal to put the Wildcats up 1-0. As the first progressed, both sides played hard, but with less than five minutes left in the frame, Riley Shepley and Sidney Mayers scored at 04:18 and 03:39, respectively, to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead after one.
  • In the second, it was all Wildcats thanks to an 8-0 quarter, which gave JWU an 11-0 lead at the half. Mayers highlighted the high-scoring frame with three goals. As the third got underway, Laura Young (Leominster, Mass.) got the squad on the board with a score off a free position attempt. However, the Wildcats responded with three unanswered goals to push their lead to 14 (15-1) going into the final quarter.
  • Despite early offense in the fourth quarter thanks to two Jordan Turcotte (Danvers, Mass.) scores and another by Young, it would not be enough as JWU added two more scores in the final quarter and would ultimately win, 17-4. 

 INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Turcotte and Young both finished the day with two goals apiece.
  • Nora Bradley (Haddon Township, N.J.) earned her first loss of the year after making eight stops in 60:00 of action.
  • Mayers led the JWU attack on the day with four scores. 
  • Kylie O'Keefe ended up with the win after stopping a shot in 30:00 of action. Meanwhile, Carley Cook finished the last 25:55 of the game for JWU. 
  • Despite the loss, Salem's 8-1 start is the best start through nine games in program history.
