THE LEAD: The Salem State women's lacrosse team extended its win streak to five games after topping Maine Maritime, 10-8, Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Maine Maritime ended up striking first at 10:00 of the first when Lillian Diver sent her shot past Salem goalie Nora Bradley (Haddon Township, N.J.). However, the Vikes responded shortly after at 07:54 when Jordan Turcotte (Danvers, Mass.) found an open Laura Young (Leominster, Mass.) to even the contest at one.
- In the back-and-forth opening moments of the first, the Mariners answered right back with a goal from Caitlyn Lamb at 06:34. Nearly three minutes later, at 03:56, Turcotte found the back of the net and made it 2-2.
- The Mariners would continue their strong offensive play in the first by tacking on two goals in the last two minutes from the sticks of Diversi and Bella Scolaro, and took a 4-2 lead going into the second.
- The second quarter was all Salem as the squad outscored the visitors, 3-1. After goals from Turcotte and Siobhan Smith (Peabody, Mass.) tied the contest at four, Maine Maritime once again retook the lead thanks to Julia Wade. But with less than two minutes left, Young netted a score to make it 5-5 and that would be the score at the half.
- Salem continued its momentum from the second into the third by blanking Maine Maritime, 3-0. Aislinn Bennett (Milford, Mass.) potted the go-ahead goal thanks to a nice look by Turcotte at 12:59. A minute later (11:59), Chelsea Martinez (Salem, Mass.) took advantage of a free position attempt and sent her shot past Maritime goalie Ella Bowes. Turcotte capped off the scoring in the frame with a goal of her own at 09:32, and the squad took its three-goal lead (8-5) into the final quarter.
- After two quick goals from the Mariners made it a one-score game (8-7), Salem once again pulled ahead by two courtesy of Kaylee Rich (Danvers, Mass.). However, Maine Maritime would not go quietly after pulling within one with 2:36 left, but Bennett sealed the game with a score at 19 seconds for the 10-8 win.
