THE LEAD— Thanks to goals from Iago De Sousa-Vieira (Medford, Mass.) and Matheus Pelissari (Lowell, Mass.) , along with an own goal by Anna Maria, the No. 4 seed Salem State men's soccer team came away with a 3-1 victory over No. 5-seed Anna Maria College in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Quarterfinals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, Salem finally broke the scoreless draw at 22:14. Stephane Fevry (Haverhill, Mass.) received a great look fromMichael Echavarria (Woburn, Mass.), who fired his shot past Anna Maria goalie Federico Foganio.
- Nearly a minute later (23:29), De Sousa-Vieira took advantage of a penalty kick and rifled a shot past a diving Foganio on the left side to make it 2-0. The Vikings' offense continued its momentum when Pelissari corralled a loose ball in front of the AMCATS net off of Kaden Yoder's (Ashburnham, Mass.) initial shot and drove it right past Foganio to put the Vikes up 3-0.
- Towards the end of the half after Pellissari's goal, Anna Maria had multiple chances to get on the board, including a look by David Ayoola that ended up hitting the post.
- Throughout the second half, Salem's defense, along with strong goaltending by Marcelo Silva (Marlborough, Mass.), kept the AMCATS offense in check. However, at 73:43, Kyle Brocker had a penalty kick of his own that he put past Silva's left side, which made it a 3-1 game.
- Despite the late Anna Maria goal, Silva and the Vikings' defense allowed just three shots on net the remainder of the game and ultimately secured the 3-1 win.
