THE LEAD— Thanks to a late Iago De Sousa-Vieira (Medford, Mass.) goal in the second, the Salem State men's soccer team came away with a 1-0 victory over UMass Dartmouth Wednesday evening at Alumni Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both sides played each other hard in the first half as neither side gave the other any momentum. Early in the frame, each side had a chance to get on the board when Jadiel Bomfim (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) rifled a shot on net but his shot was saved by Corsairs goalie, Ethan Donahue.
  • Nearly 30 seconds later at 6:48, UMass Dartmouth had a look of its own when Matt Kobrenski put a shot on goal but was turned away by Salem keeper Brady Whitmarsh (Attleboro, Mass.)
  • As the half went on, neither side let the other gain any momentum, and with 45 seconds left in the first, Jonathan Diaz (Methuen, Mass.) had one more look before halftime, but the Corsairs' defense knocked down his shot, and both sides went to the locker room tied at zero.
  • Throughout the second half, it was more of the same from the first, with both squads playing strong defense. However, at 67:53, Salem broke the scoreless tie when De Sousa-Vieira sent his shot past a diving Donahue for the 1-0 Salem advantage.
  • From then on, Salem's defense held firm, allowing only two shots on net, as the Blue and Orange secured a 1-0 non-conference victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • De Sousa-Vieira's score is his team-leading fifth goal of the season. It was also his second game-winner this season.
  • Landon Picillo (Warrick, R.I.) dished out his first career assist on Wednesday.
  • Whitmarsh stopped seven shots in the win.
  • Donahue made eight stops for the visitors.
  • The Vikes outshot the Corsairs, 22-13. The Blue and Orange also held the advantage in corners, 5-2.
  • Salem is now 3-0-1 at home this season. Last time the Vikings started their first four home games undefeated at home was in 2018, when the squad was 4-0-0 in its first four home matches.
  • Salem extended its win streak over UMass Dartmouth to three and holds the overall series lead, 22-14-4.
