THE LEAD— Thanks to three different goal scorers, the Salem State men's soccer team came away with a 3-0 win over Framingham State Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Throughout the first half, both sides were trying to gain momentum over the other. Framingham had multiple looks to get on the board first, but thanks to great goalkeeping from Marcelo Silva (Marlborough, Mass.), the Vikings were able to keep themselves within striking distance.
- Salem finally broke the scoreless tie at the 30:26 mark when Jonathan Diaz (Methuen, Mass.) found an open Matheus Pelissari (Lowell, Mass.) and gave the Vikes a 1-0 lead.
- Shortly after Pelissar's score, the Vikings struck again when Landon Picillo (Warrick, R.I.) found the back of the net courtesy of a Yuniel Sanchez (Gloucester, Mass.) helper. From then on, the Salem defense only allowed one shot and took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
- Throughout the second half, Framingham's defense did its best to limit the Salem offense, but at the 76:13 mark, Stephane Fevry (Haverhill, Mass.) netted the squad's third goal of the day. Fevry was set up when Díaz took a corner kick, while Fevry leapt up for the header to beat the Rams' keeper. After that, Silva and the Vikings defense held the Rams scoreless the rest of the contest and secured a 3-0 MASCAC win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Fevry's goal is his fourth of the year, which ties him for the team lead. He has now scored in three of his last four contests.
- Pelissari's score is his second of the year and matches his career high from last season.
- Diaz's two assists are his first multi-assist game of the season and his career.
- Silva finished the day with four stops and earned his first shutout of the season.
- Colin Holt finished the day with 11 stops for the visitors.
- Salem outshot Framingham by a 22-10 margin and held the advantage in corners, 4-1.
- The Vikings have won their last three matchups over the Rams and have outscored them 7-0 during that stretch.
- Salem is now 2-0-1 at home this year. The last time the Blue and Orange began the year undefeated at home was last year when the squad started the 2024-25 campaign, 2-0-1.
UP NEXT
- Salem has a few days off before returning to action on Wednesday, October 1, at 7:00 p.m., when the Vikes host UMass Dartmouth.
