THE LEAD— With the game tied going into the last 10 minutes of the second, Iago De Sousa-Vieira (Medford, Mass.) scored the eventual game-winner at 82:38 as the men's soccer team bested Gordon College, 3-2, Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Less than 10 minutes into the contest (8:32), Gordon struck first courtesy of a Benny Simpson score after being set up by teammate Alex Diaz. After the score, Salem peppered Fighting Scots goalie, Riley Calemmo, with five shots on net, but were unfortunately turned away each time as the visitors took a 1-0 lead into the half.
- The Fighting Scots kept its momentum going in the opening moments of the second when Zach Hutt increased the lead to two (2-0). However, Salem began to chip away at the deficit when Stephane Fevry (Haverhill, Mass.) drove a shot past Calemmo, making it a 2-1 game.
- Not long after Fevry's first goal, he potted a second score and tied things at two at 57:33 when he corralled a loose ball in front of the net.
- As the contest went on, both sides continued to play each other hard. With less than eight minutes left, De-Sousa Vieira netted the eventual game-winning score when Jadiel Bomfim (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) set up the forward to rifle a shot past Calemmo. For the remainder of the match, Salem's defense held firm and secured a 3-2 win.
