THE LEAD— In a game that saw eight total goals, four lead changes, and four ties, the Salem State men's soccer team tied 4-4 at Anna Maria College in a Saturday afternoon MASCAC battle.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Early in the first half, Anna Maria struck first just over 15 minutes (15:26) in the frame thanks to a Sam Christian goal after Kyle Brocker set him up for the score. However, as the first went on, Salem State evened the contest at one after Iago De Sousa-Vieira (Medford, Mass.) took advantage of a penalty kick at 24:32.
- Despite quickly evening the contest, the AMCATS responded courtesy of a Nils Cofalka goal at 27:12. From then on, the Anna Maria defense held strong and were able to take a 2-1 lead into halftime even though the Vikings peppered AMCATS goalie, Romain Baert, with three shots including one by Landon Picillo (Warrick, R.I.) that ricocheted off the post at 33:24.
- As the second half got underway, the Vikings evened things at two at 59:24 when Jonathan Diaz (Methuen, Mass.) buried his shot past Baert. However, similar to how the game had been going, the AMCATS once again retook the lead after another Cofalka goal at 66:33. Around four minutes later (70:01), the Vikings tied the contest at three off the boot of Matheus Pelissari (Lowell, Mass.).
- With a minute and a half remaining, Salem State grabbed its first lead of the afternoon (4-3) thanks to a Jadiel Bomfim (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) score from Yuniel Sanchez (Gloucester, Mass.). However, with 27 seconds left, the AMCATS tied the contest with a Cofalka goal, which resulted in a 4-4 tie between both squads.
