THE LEAD— Despite being held scoreless for the first half, the Salem State University men's soccer team pulled out a 2-1 win thanks to second-half goals from Iago De Sousa-Vieira (Medford, Mass.) and Jadiel Bomfim (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Regis wasted no time early as the Pride scored less than five minutes in the frame (3:45) thanks to a goal from Haroun Mafhoum from distance. After the score, Salem had multiple chances to net the equalizer as the squad peppered Regis goalie Chris Alcon with three shots, but were turned away each time.
- The Vikings' best chance came at the 34:25 mark when Naderson Curtis (Manchester, Mass.) rifled a shot to the bottom left corner but was stonewalled by Alcon which allowed the Pride to take a 1-0 lead into the half.
- As the second got underway, Salem evened the contest at one thanks to a nifty goal from De Sousa-Vieira after Bomfirm found the open forward. The Vikings offense continued its momentum as the squad potted the eventual game-winner off the boot of Bomfirm thanks to a Marcelo Silva (Marlborough, Mass.) helper.
- Salem's defense held firm the rest of the way as the Blue and Orange allowed just two shots for the remainder of the contest. Both of the Pride's shots were on net but Silva denied each chance for Regis as the squad ended up holding on for the 2-1 comeback victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- De Sousa-Vieira's score marked his first as a member of the Vikings. Meanwhile, Bomfirm's goal was also his first.
- Silva's assist ended up being the first of his career. He is the first Salem goalie to record an assist (based on available data).
- Silva ended the day with five saves, whereas Alcon finished with three.
- Salem held the advantage in shots by a 23-9 margin. The 23 shots marked a new season-high.
- The Vikings also held the lead in corner kicks, 11-3.
