THE LEAD— The Salem State kicked off the 2025 campaign with a road matchup at Skidmore College, where the squad fell in a tough 1-0 contest Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Salem had a strong chance early on (2:32) in the contest when Gabriel DaSilva (Woburn, Mass.) put a shot on net, but unfortunately, it went wide right.
- As the half went on, both sides remained scoreless, but the Thoroughbreds had two great looks at 27:15 and 32:13 but were turned away each time by Vikings goalie Marcelo Silva (Marlborough, Mass.). Thanks to his two clutch saves, Skidmore and Salme would head into the half tied at zero.
- With the second half underway, Skidmore struck first at the 51:47 mark when Tobias Catizone had a shot on net initially but then coralled the rebound to find the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.
- Later in the frame at 70:13, Naderson Curtis (Manchester, Mass.) had a chance to even things at one but saw his shot hit the top crossbar. Salem's defense held strong as the half continued by allowing just two shots the rest of the way to help the Vikings stay within striking distance.
- In the final moments of the second, Salem peppered Skidmore goalie Will Devall with back-to-back shots courtesy of Iago De Sousa-Vieira (Medford, Mass.) and Curtis, but were turned away each time.
- The squad had one more chance for the equalizer at 88:33 when Jonathan Diaz (Methuen, Mass.) rifled a shot on net, but Devall made the lunging save to his right. After that save, the hosts held on for the 1-0 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Skidmore held the shot advantage, 17-10.
- DaSilva finished the day with five saves.
- Two different Vikings finished the day with two shots for the Salem offense (Curtis and Stephane Fevry (Haverhill, Mass.)).
- Saturday's contest marked the third matchup between the two programs, with Skidmore leading the series, 2-1.
