THE LEAD
SALEM, MASS. — The Salem State men's hockey team dropped their fourth straight game, losing to the Salve Regina Seahawks 6-1. This game saw a whopping total of 63 penalty minutes combined between the Vikings and the Seahawks with three game misconducts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first period saw the Seahawks take an early lead, scoring just 02:46 into the game. Salve extended their score on back-to-back goals further in the period. Shortly after the Seahawks back-to-back goals, Salem State went on the penalty kill but was able to successfully shut down Salve. The Vikings went on the power play at 17:31 but were unable to capitalize, making the final score of the period 3-0 in favor of the Seahawks.
The majority of the second frame saw no scoring. Both teams put up a fair number of shots on goal, but nobody was able to successfully net one. Salve went on a two-minute power play at 08:46, but were successfully shut down by the Vikings penalty kill. Salem State went on the power play at 15:46 and put up three shots on goal, but not able to convert. 18:34 into the period Salve netted the first goal of the second frame, extending their lead to 4-0 over the Vikings. Shortly after their foal, the Vikings went on the power play and were quick to score, thanks to a goal from Mitch Wilkie (Sr.) at 19:34.
The third period saw a flurry of penalties, with a total of 36 combined penalty minutes assessed to both the Vikings and the Seahawks. Salem State got three straight power plays in the third period but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities. Sean McWhinnie got a 10-minute misconduct for high sticking to the head at 09:02 into the period, putting the Vikings on the penalty kill for the majority of the remaining time. Shortly after the penalty was assessed, Salve scored their fifth and final goal of the game at 16:50. There were two more game misconducts handed out with just under two minutes remaining. One went to the Viking’s John Waselko (So.) and one to the Seahawk’s Cade Destefani, both for roughing. The game ended with a final score of 6-1, Seahawks.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The Vikings were the only team able to score on the power play, going 1 for 5 on the PP. Salem State was also able to successfully shut down Salve Regina’s power play, holding them to zero power play goals throughout the duration of the game.
Mitch Wilkie scored the Viking’s only goal of the game, at 19:42 into the second period.
