Men's Golf Ends Day One with Strong Showing at NEIGA Men's Golf Championship

THE LEAD – The Salem State University Men's Golf team ended the first day at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Men's Golf Championship tied for sixth with a team score of 309 (+21) on Saturday at the Captains Golf Course.

SALEM STATE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Joe Orlando (Gloucester, Mass.) led the Vikings in the opening round with a 15th-place finish at 76 (+4). Orlando highlighted his first day with two birdies for the Vikings. 
  • Michael Murphy (Orlando, Fla.) and Matt Tramonte (Tewksbury, Mass.) capped off the top-30 for Salem with both Vikings coming in 22nd place at 77 (+5). Murphy and Tramonte each carded three birdies in the opening round for Salem. 
  • Rounding out the top-50 for the Vikes were Patrick Cotter (Melrose, Mass.) and Anthony Choukas (Weymouth, Mass.) with 42nd place finishes at 79 (+7). Cotter recorded two birdies in the opening round, whereas Choukas had a stretch of seven pars to close out the front nine. Finally, Ryan Sinnott (Brockton, Mass.) finished things off for the Vikes with a 90th-place finish at 86 (+14). 

OTHER RESULTS

  • After the first day of action, Hartford leads all schools with a score of 299 (+11), followed by Western New England in second at 301 (+13). Rounding out the top five are Endicott in third, Eastern Connecticut State in fourth, and finally, Southern Maine in fifth. 
  • For the individual leaders, Shawn Amari of Hartford, Derek Johnson of Western New England, and Connor LaCross of Endicott are all tied for first at 72 (E).
