THE LEAD—  In a wet and soggy afternoon, the Salem State field hockey team fell to the Bridgewater State Bears, 6-0 Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Bridgewater State wasted no time as the visitors got on the board less than three minutes in (2:22) when Kallie Rose found Samantha Souza in front of the Vikings' net, who poked the ball past Salem goalie, Izzy Mosley (Middleborough, Mass.) for a 1-0 lead.
  • Salem had a chance to answer at 6:09 when Hannah Cochran (Marshfield, Mass.) rifled a shot on net but was turned away by Bears goalie, Brianna Gagnon. Later in the frame, Bridgewater scored its second goal of the contest courtesy of Abbie Zuber at 11:35 for the 2-0 advantage.
  • During the second quarter, it was a defensive battle between both sides as there were only five shots total. The Vikes had two great looks right before halftime when Grace Morey (Danvers, Mass.) and Cochran peppered Gagnon with back-to-back shots at the 24-minute mark, but were stopped as the Bears took a 2-0 lead into the half.
  • After the Bears added a third goal in the third from Souza, she completed her hat trick in the fourth, which then made it a 4-0 game. Rose and Souza would add on two more goals in the final quarter, resulting in an eventual 6-0 win for the visitors.
