THE LEAD— Thanks to a Mikayla Talbot (Scarborough, Maine) hat trick, the Salem State field hockey team grabbed a 3-1 win at Gordon College Tuesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both sides played each other hard defensively early on as each side had one shot apiece in the opening 10 minutes. However, at 11:10, the Vikes got on the board first when Talbot rifled her shot past Allyson Stauffer and gave the squad a 1-0. Nearly a minute later at 12:31, Talbot netted her second score of the game after a nice set up from Zoey Radford (Middleborough, Mass.).
- Throughout the second, Salem's defense held firm and allowed two Fighting Scots shots but each attempt was off target and the Vikings took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
- Less than 10 minutes into the third (39:56), the Blue and Orange struck again when Talbot potted her third goal on the evening and pushed the Salem lead to three. Despite allowing a late third quarter goal to Gordon, the Salem defense kept the hosts in check and allowed just one more shot for the remainder of the contest and the squad came away with a 3-1 win.
