THE LEAD—  The Salem State Field Hockey team suffered its first MASCAC loss after falling 10-1 to Bridgewater State Friday evening at Mazzaferro Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Less than two minutes into the first quarter (1:26), the Bears struck first thanks to an Ellie Moberg score after Madison Ellis set her up with a great pass. Throughout the first quarter, the Bridgewater State defense gave the Vikings defense fits, as the squad was only able to get two shots off in the opening frame.
  • However, a little over a minute into the second (16:18), Salem evened the game at one off the stick of Mikayla Talbot (Scarborough, Maine) after she corralled her initial shot that was loose in front of the net.
  • Despite tying the game, Bridgewater pushed back ahead by three thanks to scores from Ellis, Raegen Perry, and Samantha Souza, which gave the Bears a 4-1 lead that they took into halftime.
  • Coming out of the half, it was all Bridgewater as the hosts put up four goals courtesy of Souza (twice), Abbie Zuber (twice), and Abbie Zuber, which made it 8-1 going into the fourth. In the final frame, the Bears tacked on two more insurance goals from Perry and Zuber for the eventual 10-1 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Talbot's goal marked her fifth of the season and currently leads the team. Her five goals this year also tie her career-high set just last year.
  • In net, Izzy Mosley (Middleborough, Mass.) made 15 stops on the night.
  • Three different Bridgewater State student-athletes finished the game with multiple goals, led by Zuber's hat trick.  Meanwhile, Souza and Perry each had two scores.
  • Brianna Gagnon (45:00) and Catherine Daoulas (15:00) split time in net tonight, combining for five saves, all of which were made by Gagnon.
  • Bridgewater held the advantage in shots, 36-9, and penalty corners as well by an 18-5 margin.
