Field Hockey Ranked Sixth in MASCAC Field Hockey Preseason Poll

SALEM, Mass. – Salem State field hockey returns to action later this month on Saturday, August 30 at Salve Regina. While the squad finished with two wins last year, the team returns its top two goal scorers in Grace Morey (Danvers, Mass.) and Mikayla Talbot (Scarborough, Maine). Last season, Morey was also a All-MASCAC Second Team honoree as well. Between the pipes, goalie Izzy Mosley (Middleborough, Mass.) will look to continue to build upon her solid career as head coach Karen Atkinson will guide the squad for her fourth season as the Vikings look to make a significant impact this year.

SEASON OUTLOOK

While Salem State only finished with a 2-15 record, Coach Atkinson feels the squad won't let last year's results get in their way and looks to have a strong bounce back season. "We are very excited for this upcoming season," said Atkinson. Along with being one of the squad's top options on offense, Morey also led Salem State in assists with five helpers while four other Vikings who dished out assists will also be coming back to help guide the offense in Aleena Frith (Pepperrell, Mass.), Lexi Ford (Methuen, Mass.), Siobhan Smith (Peabody, Mass.), and Allison Thomas (Carver, Mass.). Despite losing two seniors, the Orange and Blue will be returning 17 student-athletes from last year to help continue growing the team chemistry.

Coach's Take

"Even though we weren't as successful as we would have liked last season, the girls have come into preseason with a whole new mentality. Our hope is to complete within the conference and be challenged by non-conference games." – Head Coach Karen Atkinson.

From The Captains – So. Grace Morey (Danvers, Mass.)

"As a new sophomore captain, I am so eager to play this fall," said Morey. "The strong relationship i have with my co-captains will create a positive and supportive environment for our group this year. I also think the talent that the new freshman class are bringing in will allow us to succeed offensively and continue to grow as a team!"

Jr. – Izzy Mosley (Middleborough, Mass.)

"Looking ahead at this season I am extremely excited by this group," said Mosley. "We have some new faces that will contribute greatly to our success as well as a seasoned group of returners. I am hopeful that from the dedication this group had in the off season that we will have a strong start this fall and look to come out with some conference wins. We are more than ready for redemption and are eager to show what we can accomplish this year."

Sr. – Hannah Cochran (Marshfield, Mass.)

"This season were coming in with a mindset of revenge," said Cochran. "We have a couple new talented girls who have been working hard this summer and are ready to help upset the conference. Majority of our team are returners who know how to set the tone and fix mistakes from our last season. We're all hungry to prove what we're made of and to come out on top."

Sr. - Aleena Faith (Pepperell, Mass.)

"I am so excited to finally be back on the field and it being  my last season as a Viking I am trying to soak it all in," said Faith. "Last season we fell short but with our new comers and the talent from our upperclassmen I believe we will lead with success this season. I want to show the MASCAC that we are here to play and we are ready to win!"
