THE LEAD: The Salem State baseball team kicked off a three-game Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) set with Fitchburg State, and the squad opened the series with a 19-9 win on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Salem kicked things off in the bottom half of the first thanks to a three-run frame courtesy of RBIs from Owen Duggan (Billerica, Mass.) and Jack Doyle (Salem, Mass.)
  • Despite Fitchburg pulling within one (3-2) thanks to a two-run second, the Vikings did most of their damage in the bottom half of the frame behind a seven-run inning. Doyle and Yabdriel Gonzalez (New Haven, Conn.) highlighted the high-scoring inning with two-run RBI hits.
  • Later in the contest with Salem up eight (12-4), Fitchburg would not go quietly as the visitors chipped away with a five-run sixth that made it a 12-9 ballgame. Maxwell Riordan and Benjamin Rewenko highlighted the rally with two-run RBI hits each.
  • Even with the late offensive surge from the Falcons, the Vikes were not phased and tacked on two more runs in the sixth to go up 14-9. With a scoreless seventh from both sides, the Blue and Orange sealed the contest with a five-run eighth led by the game-clinching two-run RBI single off the bat of Ethan Stepputtis (Prospect, Conn.) for the 19-9 win.

 INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Doyle led the way with a career-high six RBIs on the day, which tied for the fourth most in a game in program history.
  • Stepputtis (three), Duggan (two), and Aidan Lynch (North Andover, Mass.) (two) were the three other Salem hitters to finish with multiple RBIs on the day.
  • Nolan Currier (Maynard, Mass.) earned the no-decision in the start after going 4.0 IP and allowing seven hits, four runs, and striking out five. Brandon McMahon (Malden, Mass.) ended up with the win in relief after tossing 2.2 IP and allowing two hits, no runs, and striking out two.
  • Rewenko guided the Fitchburg offense with five RBIs on the day.
  • Owen Corcoran ended up with the loss after going 1.1 IP and allowing nine runs, and striking out two.
