THE LEAD: The Salem State baseball team fell in a midweek matchup at No. 24 Endicott College, 10-0 Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After Endicott scored one run in the first thanks to a Kyle Grabowski sacrifice fly, Salem had a chance to threaten in the top of the second. Earlier in the frame, Jack Doyle (Salem, Mass.) drew a walk while Lucas Rincon (Revere, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to have runners on first and second with two outs. Later in the inning, Jonny Payne (Seekonk, Mass.) had another walk to load the bases. Unfortunately, Endicott starter Max Jarvie escaped the jam with a strikeout.
  • Both sides would go scoreless in the second, and after Salem went scoreless in the top half of the third, the Gulls utilized a six-run third to give themselves a 7-0 advantage. Grabowski highlighted the high-scoring inning with a two-run shot to left.
  • Despite recording singles in the fourth and sixth innings, the Endicott pitching staff kept the Salem bats at bay. Later in the sixth, the hosts added three more runs to their lead and ultimately won by a 10-0 score.

 INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Owen Duggan (Billerica, Mass.) and Doyle were the lone Vikings to record a hit on Wednesday.
  • Matt Walling (Plantsville, Conn.) earned the start but took the loss for Salem after going three innings while allowing eight hits, seven runs, and striking out one.
  • In a bullpen game for the Gulls, Ben Gill ended up with the win by tossing three innings and giving up one hit, no runs, and striking out four.
  • Salem and Endicott have now met 42 times all-time, and the Gulls lead the series, 23-17-2.
