THE LEAD: Thanks to a four-RBI day from Yabdriel Gonzalez (New Haven, Conn.), the Salem State baseball team earned an 11-0 shutout of Vassar College Tuesday morning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Salem's offense wasted no time as the squad jumped on Vassar's pitching by plating eight runs in the first inning. Gonzalez highlighted the high-scoring inning by recording two RBIs after the Vikes ended up batting around their full order.
- Between the second and third innings, the Vikings tacked on two more runs and pushed their lead to 10. From then on, Salem's starter Nolan Currier (Maynard, Mass.) kept the Brewers offense at bay, allowing just one hit while striking out four. The Blue and Orange added on another run in the seventh after Aidan Lynch (North Andover, Mass.) took advantage of a wild pitch and made it 11-0.
- Brandon McMahon (Malden, Mass.) came in for a relief appearance in the seventh and retired the side, including a strikeout, as the squad took down Vassar, 11-0.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Gonzalez's four-RBI day ended up being a new career-high for the junior infielder. Ryan Barberi (Cheshire, Conn.) was Salem's other multi-RBI hitter with two.
- Currier was stellar on the mound, earning the win for Salem after going 6.0 IP while allowing two hits, no runs, and fanning a season-high seven batters.
- James Bergman and Jack Johnson were the only two batters for Vassar to record a hit.
- Zach Berner ended up with the loss on Tuesday after he went two innings while allowing nine hits and nine runs (five earned).
- Salem ended up outhitting Vassar by an 11-2 margin. The Vikings have now recorded ten or more hits in three of their last four contests.
- Tuesday's meeting was the second ever between the two programs. Both sides have now each won a game against each other.
