WORCETSER, Mass. -- Worcester State took a pair of games form Salem State on Monday afternoon in a MASCAC doubleheader rescheduled from April 26. The Lancers edged the Vikings, 2-1 in the opener before claiming a 13-4 victory in game two. Worcester State goes to 21-11 and 11-7 in the conference. The Vikings now stand at 14-16 and 9-9 in the MASCAC.
Game 1
Ben Smith came out on top in a game one pitcher' s duel, carrying a shutout into the seventh, before prevailing 2-1, Smith struck out 16 and scattered eight hits while walking one. Christopher Mondesir went 1-for-3 with a home run.
Nick Bamforth allowed two earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and a walk in a complete game for Salem State. Jake Boucher and Owen Duggan each collected two hits.
How It Happened:
- Mondesir's home run in the second gave Worcester State a 1-0 lead.
- Andrew Medina's sixth inning single scored Tyler Normandie with the second run for the Lancers.
- Back-to-back two out singles by Derek Angell and Jake Boucher put runners on the corners in the seventh. Connor Dolan added Salem State's third straight hit to score Angell with the Vikings' first run. However, Smith recorded his third strikeout of the inning to earn the win.
Game 2
Danny DiMassimo picked up the win in game two, giving up four runs on six hits with with five strikeouts and two walks in 5.0 innings pitched. Normandie was 2-for-4 with a home run, double, four RBI and a run. Jack Savio went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI.
Nolan Currier lasted 0.1 innings for the Vikings, allowing six runs on four hits with two walks as Salem State used five pitchers in the game. Ryan Bourgeois had two hits with two RBI and a run scored.
How It Happened:
- A six-run first spurred Worcester State to victory. Normandie and Mondesir each had a two-run home run in the inning.
- An Anthony Iamarone double made it 7-0 in the second.
- Salem State added a run in the third and scored three in the fourth on a single by Yabdriel Gonzalez and two-run double by Bourgeois.
- Leading 8-4 in the fifth, the Lancers scored five more runs, thanks to a two-run triple from Riggs Catlin and RBI singles by Nathan Thurber, Jack Savio and Normandie.
