Vikings Defeat Lancers in Series Opener
SALEM, Mass. -- Cam Fisher went eight innings, allowing three runs on seven hits to lead Salem State to a key MASCAC victory, as the Vikings defeated Worcester State 8-3 at The Central Campus Baseball Field on Friday afternoon. Salem State evens their record at 14-14 and are now 9-7 in conference. The Lancers stand at 18-11 and 9-7 in the MASCAC.
Fisher struck out five and walked won in earning his first victory of the season. Jake Boucher pitched the ninth, allowing two walks before retiring the side. Owen Duggan was 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and run scored for the Vikings. Yabdriel Gonzalez added two hits in four at-bats and played solid defense at third.
Worcester State starter Gavin Price struggled, walking five batters in 2.2 innings pitched. Price allowed six runs -- five earned -- on five hits with four strikeouts. Tyler Smith had the only multi-hit game for the Lancers going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
How It Happened:
- Two walks, an infield single and two wild pitches, brought home Boucher with the game's first run in the first.
- Fisher cruised through the first two innings, retiring the side each time while racking up four strikeouts.
- The Vikings opened up a 5-0 lead in the second after a hit-by-pitch and walk was followed by a passed ball that set up Connor Dolan with a two-run single. Duggan's double and an RBI single by Ethan Stepputtis plated two more runs.
- The Lancers scored three times in the third to draw to within two runs. Ryan Jewett's triple scored the first run and was followed by an RBI double by Riggs Catlin. Tyler Smith's two-out line drive single to left made it a 5-3 game.
- Duggan added an RBI Single in the third, before Salem State put the game away with two more runs in the seventh on RBI singles by Derek Angell and Boucher.
