Bridgewater State Takes Two From Salem State
SALEM, Mass. -- Bridgewater State collected a pair of wins over Salem State in a MASCAC doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field. Following a one-hour rain delay, the Bears won game one, 5-4 in 11 innings after Nolan Currier hit a dramatic two-out home run in the ninth to tie the game for the Vikings. Game two saw Shane Handrahan of Bridgewater State go the distance as the Bears claimed a 4-2 win.
Game 1
Cam Fisher started for Salem State and pitched 6.2 innings in his strongest performance of the season, allowing three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Currier was 3-for-5 at the plate with a run and two RBI. Centerfielder Ethan Supplettis went 2-for-4 and took away a go-ahead two-run home run by Bridgewater State's Joshua Selander in the sixth, as he reached over the centerfield fence to bring the ball back and deny Selander.
Trey Yesu had a strong outing for the Bears as he lasted 6.2 innings, scattering nine hits and allowing three runs with six strikeouts while not walking a batter. Kevin Lindsay was 4-for-5 with a two RBI and a run for Bridgewater State.
How It Happened
- Selander's single in the fourth put the Bears on top 1-0.
- Yabdriel Gonzalez fielder's choice with the bases loaded tied the game in the bottom of the inning.
- Owen Duggan gave Salem State a 2-1 advantage in the fifth with a single up the middle.
- Selander appeared to give the Bears the lead in the sixth with a drive to deep center, but Supplettis positioned himself perfectly at the fence, bringing the ball back in for the final out.
- Both starters made it to the seventh, but gave way to the bullpens after running into trouble. Lindsay's single with the bases loaded scored two to give the Bears a 3-2 lead.
- However, Currier answered in the bottom of the seventh, tying the game with a base hit through the gap on the the left side of the infield.
- Scott Emerson's ninth inning single gave Bridgewater State the lead back until Currier launched a home run to deep rightfield, to retie the game.
- Ryan Flaherty's RBI single to center proved to be the difference in the 11th as reliever Nick Reiser earned the win in 1.2 innings of work, giving up a run on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
- Aidan Carabello took the loss, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing two runs - one earned - on five hits with five strikeouts and four walks.
Game 2
Handrahan earned the win in game two, going 7.0 innings and giving up just two runs on four hits, with only one coming after the first, with five strikeouts and a pair of walks. Selander and Jamie Luna each went 2-for-3 for Bridgewater State.
Nick Bamfort started for the Vikings and lasted 4.0 inning, allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
- Currier's groundout and a single by Supplettis made it 2-0 in favor of Salem State in the first.
- Riley Thornell singled to left for the first run for Bridgewater State before Oscar Vargas-Pacheco tied it up with a fielder's choice.
- Lindsay walked with the bases loaded in the fourth to make it a 3-2 game before Selander's single added an insurance run for the Bears in the seventh.
Salem State goes to Westfield State this Friday for a MASCAC game @ 3:30 pm.
