Vikings Power Past Chargers 10-8

SALEM, Mass.  -- Nolan Currier and Yabdriel Gonzalez each went 2-for-3 and combined for five runs as Salem State powered past Colby Sawyer, 10-8 on Monday at The Central Campus Baseball Field. The Vikings are now 6-8 while the Chargers go to 6-14.

Salem State used five pitchers with Riley Fenerty picking up his first win (1-0) after relieving starter Alex Metznik in the third. Fenerty went 5.0 innings, allowing four runs on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Jake Boucher earned the one-inning save. Ethan Supplettis was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run. Owen Duggan was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.

Mike Krouse was 3-for-4 with two runs for Colby Sawyer while Cooper O'Brien finished 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Nick Fenuccio (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs - three earned - on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

How It Happened

  • O'Brien's first inning home run put the Chargers in front 1-0.
  • Currier tripled to deep centerfield in the bottom of the second and scored after a mishandle by the rightfielder.
  • Colby Sawyer pulled ahead, scoring three runs in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead, scoring twice in the inning on balks and an RBI single by Jesse Chaves.
  • Ryan Bourgeois hit an RBI double in the fourth to draw Salem State to within 4-3.
  • A three-run fifth gave Salem State the lead for good as a single by Gonzalez, a sacrifice fly by Peter Moor, and and an RBI double, one of five in the game by the Vikings, off the bat of Supplettis made it a 6-4 game.
  • Moor's two-run double in the sixth extended the lead before Supplettis added a two-run single to make the score 10-8 in favor of the Salem State.
  • Evan Dennis added a solo home run for the Chargers in the seventh. 
  • Colby Sawyer plated three in the eighth after an RBI double by O'Brien pulled Colby Sawyer to within two runs, but pitcher Brandon McMahon ended the threat.

The Vikings will travel to Bridgewater State for the first game of a three-game set on Friday, April 4 @ 3:00 pm.
