SALEM, Mass. – Midfielder Gabriel Meireles (Everett, Mass.) was named to the 2018 United Soccer Coaches All-New England Second Team on Tuesday. Meireles, the only freshman to be named to either the first or second team, led all freshman in scoring in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) this season, tallying 23 points (8g, 7a) while spearheading the Vikings' offense as one of the league's top passing midfielder's as his seven assists were third most in the conference this year.

Joining Meireles on the first-team was Felipe Montiel (Maracaibo, Venezuela) while Igor Caldas (Vitoria, Brazil) and Lucas Amaral (Peabody, Mass.) earned second team honors.
Meireles led all freshman in the conference with 23 points (8g, 7a) and was the focal point of the Vikings’ offense this season as one of the league’s top passing midfielder’s and his seven assists were third most in the MASCAC this year. Montiel was one of the MASCAC’s top defenders this season, starting in all 18 games for Salem State while adding three goals and an assist. Montiel spearheaded a unit that allowed just 14 goals in 19 games (12-3-4) for a league-best .070 goals against average.

SALEM, MASS. – Salem State kicks off its 2018-19 campaign on Friday, August 31st, as men's soccer hosts the Salem State Tournament to highlight three games on opening day at Alumni Field.
Field hockey will begin play at noon against North Shore rival Gordon College, before Anna Maria and Curry open the men's soccer season at 3:00 PM. Salem State, the defending conference champions, will host Southern Vermont at 6:00 PM to cap the day. On Saturday, the tournament will continue with the consolation match at 1:00 PM followed by the championship game at 4:00 PM.

Salem State received six first place votes for 47 points in this year's poll. The Vikings finished the MASCAC season 7-0 on their way to the conference regular season title. Returning for the defending champs is All-Conference goalie Chris Jimenez (Nashua, N.H.), who between the pipes last season led the league in goals against average (0.98) and save percentage (.838) while finishing third in saves (83) and goals against (16).
