The 2010 Salem State women's volleyball team enters its third season under head coach Deanna Warner. Hoping to continue their climb toward earning a MASCAC Confernce post-season tournament berth, coach Warner hopes this is the year that their hard work will pay off.
The Salem State College women’s volleyball team finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 7-22, which is the most wins for Salem State volleyball since 2004. In addition, the team narrowly missed qualifying for the conference tournament, finishing with a conference record of 2-4. Coach Warner considers this to be quite an accomplishment as the team is still in the rebuilding process. Highlights of the 2009 season included: eight members of the team being named to the MASCAC All-Academic Team, the most of any volleyball team in the conference; hosting the 1st annual SSC Volleyball Dig Pink Fundraising Event, which raised over $500 for breast cancer research; and Rebecca Chapa being named to the University of Massachusetts – Dartmouth All-Tournament Team, Regis College All-Tournament Team and MASCAC All-Conference Team.
This year, The Lady Vikings are looking to build upon the experience of nine returning players and three talented incoming freshmen. “Five of our starting players from last season are returning, so the experience level will be quite high.” said Warner. "We basically have starters returning at every position except libero, which will definitely be an advantage. In addition, we have extremely talented freshmen coming in, who I expect will see increased playing time throughout the season.” The expectation for this year's squad is high, with hopes of the team qualifying for the 2010 MASCAC conference tournament.
SSC returners include: senior outside hitter Katie McKenna (Hamilton-Wareham), senior middle / right side hitter Shannon Malone (North Quincy), junior setter / right side hitter Jazmin Barrows (New Bedford), junior outside hitter Rachel Murphy (Sheehan, CT), junior middle hitter Brittany Roscoe (Lowell), sophomore middle hitter Stella Gutierrez (Salem), sophomore libero / setter Angie Gonzalez (Lawrence), sophomore libero Ali Williams (Frontier) and freshmen setter Mackenzie Carpenter (Peabody Veterans Memorial), who was injured during the 2009 season.
The Lady Vikings open their 2010 season when they travel to Portland, ME on Saturday, September 4th to play the University of Southern Maine and Maine Maritime Academy. The Lady Vikings home opener is slated for Tuesday, September 7 at 7:00 pm, when they face off against The Lions of Eastern Nazarene College.
