WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Coast Guard's Amanda Frederick (Lebanon, OH) was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4, to lead the Academy to a 7-1 win over Salem State College Saturday evening in the NCAA Regional Softball Tournament at Wellesley College. The Bears move on to play Brandeis on Sunday, May 16, at noon, in the loser bracket final. The Vikings end their historic run and finish their season with a school-best 35-10-1 record.
Coast Guard opened a lead with three runs in the first, including an RBI single from Courtney Wolf (Fredericksburg, MD) and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Carin Sweeney (Woodbury, MN). The Bears added two more in the second, with singles from Jamie Kim (Irvine, CA), Frederick, and Holli Bastinck (Wayne, NJ), and two more in the fourth for a 7-0 advantage.
The Bears' hurler, Hayley Feindel (River Ridge, LA), was over-powering on the mound, allowing just one hit and no runs through four frames. But Salem State got on the board in the fifth, when Michelle Grifoni (Peabody, MA) led off with a single and eventually scored on a fielder's choice to trim the lead to 7-1. But the Vikings could get no closer as Feindel sealed the win with two scoreless innings in the circle.
For the Bears, Frederick recorded four hits in four at-bats, to go along with three RBI. Bastinck, Wolf, and Kim chipped in two hits apiece. Feindel (31-9) got the win, allowing one run on four hits while striking out six.
For Salem State, Grifoni notched two hits, while Jess Baird (Worcester, MA) and Sarra Bergeron (Methuen, MA) added one hit each. Katelynn Fanning (East Boston, MA) gave up six hits and five runs in the loss.
