Huskies Earn 8-1 Victory Over Vikings
Kane
Salem, MA – The University of Southern Maine Huskies used a four-run fifth inning to defeat the Salem State Vikings 8-1 on Thursday afternoon at Salem State College’s Baseball Field.

Salem State drops to 10-9 this season. The University of Southern Maine improves its record to 10-7.

Starter Joe Curran (Arlington, MA) picked up his first win of the season for Southern Maine. Curran pitched six innings, struck out four batters and gave up only one run.

John Carey (South Portland, ME) went 3-5 with three RBI’s for USM.

Viking’s starting pitcher Andrew Guido (Peabody, MA) took the loss in his first start of the season. Guido allowed four earned runs and struck out four Huskies in six innings of work. `

Ryan Mahan (Beverly, MA) relieved Guido to begin the seventh inning. Mahan struck out one and allowed one hit.

Salem State’s lone run came on a Ryan Kane (Nahant, MA) solo homerun over the right field fence in the fourth inning. The homerun is the fourth on the season for Kane. He is now tied with Steve Mucci (Wallkill, NY) for the team lead in homeruns.

The Huskies scored four runs in the fifth inning. Zach Fernandes (Eliot, ME) scored the first run of the inning on Mike Eaton’s (Sabattus, ME) RBI groundout to first base.

In a bizarre play Viking centerfielder Sam Perkins (Milford, MA) attempted to throw out Colin Henry (Penobscot, ME) at third base, however his arm proved to be too accurate. The throw by Cocci hit Henry in the helmet and bounced out of play. This allowed for Henry to score the final run of the inning.

The Salem State College Vikings will open up a stretch of seven inter-conference matchups in their next eight games with a double header against the 7-7 Fitchburg State Falcons at Fitchburg’s Michael P. Riccards field on April 10th.
