Galindo Pitches Vikings to Fifth Straight Win

Salem, MA -- Joe Galindo (Monument, CO) went five innings, allowing just one run wile striking out nine to lead the Salem State Vikings to a 14-1 victory over the Emerson College Lions.
 
Galindo, who leads the conference in strikeouts with 54, picked up his fourth win of the year.

Cris Cocci (Wakefield, RI) jump started the Salem State (16-14) offense in the first inning. Cocci laced a double to right center and following consecutive hits by Ryan Kane (Nahant, MA) and Evan Valcourt (Salisbury, MA), the Vikings built a 2-0 lead. Kane added another run on a failed pickoff by starter Jeff Kolb (Barrington, RI) to make the score 3-0 at the end of one inning. 

Emerson (13-17) loaded the bases in the third inning when Pete Hall (North Canton, OH) and Adam Speakman (Barrington,RI) both reached with base hits. Following a walk, Pete Maltzan (Lexington, MA) blooped a single to left to score the first run of the game for the Lions. However, Galindo retired the next two batters to limit the damage and Salem State still led 3-1.

Brandon Topp (Andover, MA) entered with two outs in the bottom of the third after Kolb walked the bases full. Topp walked Guery Alonzo (Boston, MA) to force in the fourth run and Matt Gusdorf (Reston, VA) followed with a two-run double to plate two more runs. Troy Ingemi (Malden, MA) continued the inning with a base hit to increase the Salem State lead to 7-1. 

Kolb lasted just two and two thirds innings giving up six runs on three hits and suffered the loss. 

Salem State tacked on three more runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Kane reached base for the third time on a single and scored on an error to give the home team an 8-1 lead. An inning later Gusdorf scored on an RBI single by Cocci, who later came around on a wild pitch to make the score 10-1. 

Matt Kerr (East Freetown, MA), who relieved Galindo in the sixth pitched well going three and one third innings and allowed just two hits with five strikeouts. 

Topp allowed two more runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Gusdorf and Troy Ingemi (Malden, MA) before being replaced by Omid Maajdi (Westchester, CA). 

Valcourt who finished 2-for-4 with two runs batted in doubled home another run as Salem State took a commanding 14-1 lead lead in the seventh.
 
Andrew Rainville (Salem, MA) got the final three outs by retiring the side in the ninth to give the Vikings their fifth straight win. 

Kane and Cocci each finished with three hits apiece for the Vikings with six runs scored. Maltzan went 1-for-4 with an RBI for the Lions, who have now lost four straight.

Salem State travels to Westfield State tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
