Salem, MA - Salem Sate’s Chris Cocci’s (Wakefield, RI) walk -off base hit ended a fourteen inning matchup between the Vikings and the Fighting Scots of Gordon College at Salem State’s baseball field on Tuesday afternoon.
Cocci finished 1-4 with two RBI’s and Vikings reliever Andrew Guido (Peabody, MA) 1-2 in 12 appearances, notched his first win of the season. Guido allowed only one hit in five scoreless innings of relief.
Salem State improves to 14-14 on the season. Gordon College is now 14-17.
Stephen Myhren (Vernon, NJ) took the loss for Gordon College. He allowed two earned runs in his five inning appearance. Myrhen had a better day at the plate going 2-for-6 with two RBI’s and one run scored.
The day’s matchup pitted Salem State hurler Troy Ingemi (Malden, MA) with a record of 2-0 against the Fighting Scots starter, 1-2 Eric Wolak (Trumball, CT). Neither pitcher factored in the decision. Ingemi fanned eight Fighting Scots in a nine-inning effort that accounted for three earned runs on ten hits.
One unearned run scored under Wolak’s seven and 2/3 inning watch on the mound.
The Fighting Scots got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Stephen Myhren (Vernon, NJ) drove in team captain Andrew Zgrabalich (Doylestown, PA) from third. Ben Davidson (Sterling, MA) soon followed with an RBI single to score Myhren.
With two out in the bottom of the fourth the Vikings cut the Gordon lead in half. With Evan Valcourt (Salisbury, MA) at the plate facing a two strike count from Wolak, the pitch got past Gordon’s starting catcher Geoff Brown (East Moriches, NY). The relay from the backstop to the plate was off target allowing shortstop Ryan Kane (Nahant, MA) to slide safely into home.
In the top of the eighth Myhren’s once again drove in Zgrabalich to extend the Gordon College lead to 3-1
The Vikings pressured to take the lead in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs and a man on first and second for Salem State’s Devon Davis (Abington, MA) coach John Ryan called on reliever Zach Bohling (Trumbull, CT) to get his Fighting Scots out of the jam. Davis drew a walk from Bohling to load the bases for Valcourt. The righty sailed a pitch to deep right field where Kris Camelio (Lexington, MA) made the out to end the Vikings scoring threat.
Ingemi retired the Gordon college side in order and kept the Viking chance alive. The bases were loaded in the bottom half of the inning with Cocci at the bat for Salem State. Cocci hit a sacrifice fly to score left fielder James Noftle (Peabody, MA). In the next at bat co-captain Steve Mucci (Wallkill, NY), hit into a fielder’s choice that allowed pinch runner Joe Galindo (Monument, CO) to cross the plate and send the game into extra innings tied at three runs apiece.
In the 14th, Mike Dedo (Leominster, MA) led off the bottom with a walk. Coach Ken Perrone substituted Matt Kerr (East Freetown, MA) to pinch run for Dedo. Kerr advanced to second on a pass ball and then advanced to third on a balk by Gordon College reliever Myhren. Two batters later Cocci smacked a pitch through the left side of the infield to score Kerr to win the game.
